Paced Auditory Serial Subtraction

Paced Auditory Serial Subtraction is a neuropsychological task that measures cognitive performance by requiring people to continuously subtract numbers presented aloud at a fixed pace. Participants listen to each new digit, retain the preceding value in working memory, calculate the difference, and respond before the next item arrives, engaging attention, processing speed, mental arithmetic, and response control under time pressure. In neuroscience, the task helps assess cognitive load and the effects of stress, fatigue, brain injury, neurological disease, or experimental interventions on information processing. Performance accuracy and response speed provide objective indicators of executive functioning and dynamic changes in attention.

Auditory brainstem neurons of avians and mammals are specialized for fast neural encoding, a fundamental process for normal hearing functions. These neurons arise from distinct precursors of embryonic hindbrain. We present techniques utilizing electroporation to express genes in the hindbrain of chicken embryos to study gene function during auditory development.

(2023)This video demonstrates the measurement of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in a mouse. Electrodes are placed on the head, behind the ear, and near the tail of an anesthetized mouse. Acoustic stimuli at various intensities are delivered, and electric signals generated are recorded as waveforms.

Objective and easy measurement of sensory processing is extremely difficult in nonverbal or vulnerable pediatric patients. We developed a new methodology to quantitatively assess infants and children's cortical processing of light touch, speech sounds, and the multisensory processing of the 2 stimuli, without requiring active subject participation or causing discomfort in vulnerable patients.

Measuring Reaction Time and Donders' Method of Subtraction

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University The ambition of experimental psychology is to characterize the mental events that support the human ability to solve problems, perceive the world, and turn thoughts into words and sentences. But people cannot see or feel those mental events; they cannot be weighed, combined in test tubes, or grown in a dish. Wanting to study mental life, nonetheless, Franciscus Donders, a Dutch ophthalmologist in the early 1800s, came up with a...
