Precision Grip Testing

Precision grip testing is a behavioral method that measures how accurately an individual controls the force and coordination needed to grasp and manipulate a small object. In neuroscience studies, an instrumented handle or object records grip force, load force, timing, and adjustments as the subject performs a precision grasp, revealing how sensory feedback and motor commands are integrated. These measurements help assess fine motor control, sensorimotor learning, and deficits caused by neurological injury or disease. Because the test produces quantitative behavioral data, it supports comparisons across experimental conditions and evaluation of recovery or treatment effects in neuroscience research.

Tension Tests of Polymers

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Polymeric materials are widely used in civil structures, with uses ranging from very soft sealants to more rigid pipes in water and wastewater systems. The most basic definition of a polymer is a molecular structure with repeating subunits. The term polymer comes from Greek, where "poly" means many, and "-mer" means basic unit. Monomers, or single mers, are the specific repeating units. With...

Uncertainty in Measurement: Accuracy and Precision

2020

Scientists typically make repeated measurements of a quantity to ensure the quality of their findings and to evaluate both the precision and the accuracy of their results. Measurements are said to be precise if they yield very similar results when repeated in the same manner. A measurement is considered accurate if it yields a result that is very close to the true or the accepted value. Precise values agree with each other; accurate values agree with a true value. Suppose a quality control...

Quantitative evaluation of bacterial growth is essential to understanding microbial physiology as a systems-level phenomenon. A protocol for experimental manipulation and an analytical approach are introduced, allowing for precise, high-throughput analysis of bacterial growth, which is a key subject of interest in systems biology.

Balance and Coordination Testing

2023

Balance and coordination are critical components involved in the control of movement. Many sensory receptors and neural processing units are required to help individuals maintain balance while performing various activities. Deficits in balance and coordination occur in patients suffering from movement disorders or due to aging. Therefore, scientists are trying to understand the pathophysiology behind these conditions. One way to do that is by using rodent models and testing them on behavioral...
