Rhythmic Firing Analysis

Rhythmic firing analysis is the study of recurring patterns in neuronal action potentials, providing a way to characterize how neural activity changes over time. Researchers examine spike trains using measures such as firing frequency, interspike intervals, burst structure, and phase relationships to identify regular oscillations or coordinated activity. These patterns can reflect intrinsic membrane properties, synaptic input, and network-level synchronization. In neuroscience, rhythmic firing analysis supports investigations of brain rhythms, sensory processing, motor control, learning, and neurological disorders, while helping connect cellular activity with circuit function and behavior.

Here we describe an adaptation of protocols used to induce homeostatic plasticity in neurons for the study of plasticity of astrocytic G protein-coupled receptors. Recently used to examine changes in astrocytic group I mGluRs in juvenile mice, the method can be applied to measure scaling of various astrocytic GPCRs, in tissue from adult mice in situ and in vivo, and to gain a better appreciation of the sensitivity of astrocytic receptors to changes in neuronal activity.
