Robotic Tms Motor Mapping

Robotic TMS motor mapping is a neurophysiological technique that uses robotic positioning to chart motor cortex organization and assess corticospinal function. A robot guides a transcranial magnetic stimulation coil to precise scalp locations, while repeated pulses activate cortical neurons and evoke measurable muscle responses, allowing researchers to identify motor hotspots and construct response maps. In neuroscience, these maps support studies of brain connectivity, motor control, plasticity, and recovery after neurological injury. Automated coil placement also improves targeting consistency and reproducibility, strengthening longitudinal experiments and enabling more precise evaluation of rehabilitation, neurosurgical planning, and interventions that modify cortical excitability.

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California One principle of brain organization is the topographic mapping of information. Especially in sensory and motor cortices, adjacent regions of the brain tend to represent information from adjacent parts of the body, resulting in maps of the body expressed on the surface of the brain. The primary sensory and motor maps in the brain surround a prominent sulcus known as the central sulcus. The cortex...

2026

Here, we describe a standardized protocol for motor mapping using nTMS combined with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based reconstruction of the corticospinal tract (CST). The protocol is reproducible, clinically feasible, and readily integrable into routine clinical workflows, providing a robust and valuable framework for motor pathway assessment, neuroplasticity research, and rehabilitation planning.
