Tissue Injury Quantification

Tissue injury quantification is the systematic measurement of structural and cellular damage in biological tissue, providing objective evidence of injury severity and recovery. In neuroscience, researchers quantify changes by combining tissue sectioning with histological staining, microscopy, image analysis, lesion-volume calculations, and counts of affected neurons or glial cells; molecular markers can further indicate inflammation, degeneration, or cell death. These measurements help compare experimental conditions, evaluate therapies, and connect anatomical damage with functional outcomes after trauma, ischemia, neurodegenerative disease, or other insults. Standardized quantification also improves reproducibility and supports longitudinal assessment of tissue repair and treatment efficacy.

We present a method for chromatin immunoprecipitation from dorsal root ganglia tissue following axonal injury. The approach can be used to identify specific transcription factor binding sites and epigenetic modification of histone and DNA important for the regeneration of injured axons in both the peripheral and central nervous system.

Tissue Injury: Inflammation and Repair

2023

Following injury, the integrity of the injured tissues must be reestablished. For example, in skin tissue, wound repair involves coordination among resident skin cells, blood mononuclear cells, extracellular matrix, growth factors, and cytokines to complete the healing cascade. Formation of Blood Clot In case of deep injuries, trauma to blood vessels results in blood loss. In the meantime, phospholipids released from the ruptured endothelial cellular membrane are converted into arachidonic...
