Dimercaprol Chelation

Dimercaprol chelation is a pharmacological treatment that uses a metal-binding agent to reduce toxicity from certain heavy metals. Its two sulfhydryl groups bind metals such as arsenic, mercury, and gold, forming stable complexes that prevent these metals from interacting with essential cellular enzymes and promote their elimination, primarily through the kidneys. Clinicians may use dimercaprol in selected cases of acute heavy-metal poisoning, sometimes alongside other antidotes for severe lead toxicity. Because treatment can cause adverse effects and may redistribute metals within the body, its use requires careful assessment, dosing, and monitoring.

Complexation Equilibria: The Chelate Effect

2024

In complexation reactions, metal atoms or cations interact with ligands to form donor-acceptor adducts called metal complexes. Ligands that bind through one donor site are monodentate, ligands with two donor sites are bidentate, and those with more than two donor sites are polydentate ligands. For example, ethylene diamine is a bidentate ligand that binds through two nitrogen donor atoms, forming a five-membered ring. EDTA is a polydentate ligand that binds through four oxygen and two nitrogen...

High-resolution Thermal Micro-imaging Using Europium Chelate Luminescent Coatings

2017

Europium thenoyltrifluoroacetonate (EuTFC) has an optical luminescence line at 612 nm, whose activation efficiency decreases strongly with temperature. If a sample coated with a thin film of this material is micro-imaged, the 612 nm luminescent response intensity may be converted into a direct map of sample surface temperature.

We describe a fluorescent assay that can quickly and inexpensively confirm the ability of novel compounds to chelate iron. The assay measures the ability of compounds to outcompete the iron binding activity of the weak iron chelating fluorescent probe Calcein, resulting in a quantifiable increase in fluorescence when chelation occurs.

Preparation of Biomass-based Mesoporous Carbon with Higher Nitrogen-/Oxygen-chelating Adsorption for Cu(II) Through Microwave Pre-Pyrolysis

2019

Here, we present a protocol to synthesize nitrogen/oxygen dual-doped mesoporous carbon from biomass by chemical activation in different pyrolysis modes followed by modification. We demonstrate that the microwave pyrolysis benefits the subsequent modification process to simultaneously introduce more nitrogen and oxygen functional groups on the carbon.
