Pneumococcal Pneumonia

Pneumococcal pneumonia is a lung infection caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae and remains an important target of pharmacological treatment and prevention. After colonizing the upper respiratory tract, the organism can reach the alveoli, where bacterial components trigger inflammation, recruit immune cells, and promote fluid accumulation that disrupts gas exchange. Pharmacology addresses the disease through antimicrobial therapy selected according to clinical severity, likely susceptibility, and local resistance patterns, while supportive care helps maintain respiratory function. Pneumococcal conjugate and polysaccharide vaccines reduce the risk of invasive disease and inform broader strategies for preventing antibiotic-resistant infections.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading pathogen causing severe community-acquired pneumonia and responsible for over 2 million deaths worldwide. The impact of bacterial factors implicated in fitness or virulence can be monitored in real-time in an acute mouse pneumonia or bacteremia model using bioluminescent bacteria.

Latex agglutination testing is a simple, rapid and inexpensive method for serotyping Streptococcus pneumoniae, and has also been widely applied in diagnostic microbiology. This manuscript describes the in-house production of latex agglutination reagents, quality control procedures and the application of this technique to pneumococcal serotyping.
