Block Spring Oscillator

A block spring oscillator is a mechanical system in which a block attached to a spring moves back and forth about an equilibrium position, providing a model for periodic motion in physics. When displaced, the spring produces a restoring force described by Hooke’s law, F = −kx, causing acceleration toward equilibrium; for a frictionless system, the block undergoes simple harmonic motion with a frequency determined by the spring constant and mass. Experiments with block spring oscillators allow students and researchers to measure period, determine spring constants, examine energy exchange between elastic potential and kinetic forms, and assess how damping or external forces alter real-world vibrations in structures, instruments, and mechanical devices.

Frequency of Spring-Mass System

One interesting characteristic of the simple harmonic motion (SHM) of an object attached to a spring is that the angular frequency, and the period and frequency of the motion, depend only on the mass and the force constant of the spring, and not on other factors such as the amplitude of the motion or initial conditions. We can use the equations of motion and Newton's second law to find the angular frequency, frequency, and period. Consider a block on a spring on a frictionless surface. There...

Here we describe how to build a robust spring-transport mechanism for a spinning rotor gauge. This device securely immobilizes the rotor and keeps it under vacuum during transportation. We also describe packaging that minimizes the risk of damage during transport. Tests show our design works for typical shocks during transport.

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of rhythmic neuronal network activity, also known as theta oscillations, in an isolated hippocampus. Electrodes are inserted into various layers and spatial positions to detect and analyze theta oscillations. This shows the unique neuronal compositions and the connectivity of the neuronal network across different layers of the hippocampus.
