Brain Processing

Brain processing is the way the nervous system receives, interprets, stores, and uses information to guide behavior and mental activity. It depends on communication among neurons, in which electrical signals and neurotransmitters transmit information across connected brain networks; these networks integrate sensory input with attention, memory, emotion, and prior experience. In psychology, studying brain processing helps explain perception, learning, language, decision-making, and social behavior. It also supports research into how brain function changes with development, injury, mental health conditions, and interventions, linking biological activity to observable cognition and behavior.

High-density electroencephalography (dEEG) is being used increasingly to study brain development and plasticity in the early years of life. Here we present an application of sophisticated analysis techniques that builds on traditional EEG recording to understand the oscillatory dynamics of rapid auditory processing in the infant brain.

This protocol describes key steps involved in assessing the sensitivity of the brain of one person to the stimulus processing of a close other by selecting pairs of partners, recording their electroencephalogram (EEG) simultaneously and computing their event-related brain potentials (ERPs).

Two-Photon Microscopy for Studying Microglial Process Attraction Toward a Compound in a Mouse Brain Slice

Source: Etienne, F. et al. Two-photon Imaging of Microglial Processes' Attraction Toward ATP or Serotonin in Acute Brain Slices. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the use of two-photon microscopy to study the attraction of microglial processes toward an injected compound in brain slices. It provides an overview of preparing mouse brain slices, injecting a chemoattractant test compound, and imaging fluorescently labeled microglia to visualize their responses.
