Dr. Alan Doucette is a Professor of Chemistry at Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Canada, a place he is proud to call home, as it was here that he earned his BSc degree. His PhD work at the University of Alberta (’97 under supervisor Dr. Liang Li) motivated his current research, which centers on the development of new technologies to improve proteome characterization by mass spectrometry (MS). Doucette focuses on the creation of front-end sample preparation devices that enable the manipulation of proteins, particularly for top-down proteoform analysis. Highlights of his past work include the GELFrEE protein separation platform, which exploits the benefits of SDS to enable mass-based proteome fractionation. SDS depletion and purification can be achieved through protein precipitation, as Doucette has shown that the combination of salt and organic solvents achieves exceptional high recovery. Precipitation is simplified with the commercial ProTrap XG, another commercial example from the Doucette lab. Alan is also passionate about chemical education and inspiring the next generation of researchers.
