Flight Propensity Testing

Flight propensity testing is a behavioral assay that measures an organism’s tendency and capacity to initiate and maintain flight under defined conditions. In insect studies, researchers place individuals in a controlled testing system and record responses such as flight initiation, duration, distance, or frequency while regulating variables including age, sex, temperature, and light. These measurements help distinguish differences in locomotor behavior from broader effects of handling or environmental stress. The results support research on dispersal, migration, mating behavior, and population movement, while informing ecological studies and the evaluation of traits relevant to insect management programs.

Marginal Propensity to Consume

2025

The marginal propensity to consume (MPC) describes how much of an additional dollar of disposable income a household is likely to spend rather than save. It provides insight into consumer behavior and is a foundational component in the analysis of fiscal policy effectiveness and national income determination.Concept and MeasurementMPC is measured as the ratio of the change in consumption (ΔC) to the change in disposable income (ΔY), expressed as:MPC = ΔC / ΔYFor example, if an individual's...

A Simple Flight Mill for the Study of Tethered Flight in Insects

2015

Flight in insects is influenced by a number of factors and the propensity to disperse is an important variable in understanding insect ecology and biological control strategies. We describe the construction and use of a simple, relatively inexpensive, and flexible flight mill for measuring parameters of tethered flight in insects.

Using Flight Mills to Measure Flight Propensity and Performance of Western Corn Rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (LeConte)

Flight mills are important tools for comparing how age, sex, mating status, temperature, or various other factors may influence an insect’s flight behavior. Here we describe protocols to tether and measure the flight propensity and performance of western corn rootworm under different treatments.

An efficient procedure to assess the oligomerization propensity of single-pass transmembrane domains (TMDs) is described. Chimeric proteins consisting of the TMD fused to ToxR are expressed in an E. coli reporter strain. TMD-induced oligomerization causes dimerization of ToxR, activation of transcription and production of the reporter protein, -galactosidase.
