Stress Abstinence Signs

Stress abstinence signs are observable physical, emotional, cognitive, or behavioral changes that may appear when a person stops using a substance or habitual behavior to regulate stress. They can arise as the brain and body adjust to the loss of a familiar coping stimulus, potentially producing craving, irritability, anxiety, restlessness, sleep changes, or difficulty concentrating; the pattern depends on what was stopped and how it was used. In behavioral research, tracking these signs helps distinguish stress responses from withdrawal-like effects, evaluate coping strategies, and identify factors that influence relapse risk. Careful assessment supports safer intervention and more precise interpretation of abstinence studies.

A Procedure to Study the Effect of Prolonged Food Restriction on Heroin Seeking in Abstinent Rats

2013

A procedure that allows a demonstration of robust augmentation of drug seeking in food-restricted rats is described. Following heroin self-administration training, rats go through an abstinence period, in a drug-free environment, during which they are mildly food restricted. Drug seeking is then tested in the drug-associated environment.

A Procedure to Study Stress-Induced Relapse of Heroin Seeking after Punishment-Imposed Abstinence

2022

A procedure that demonstrates a robust acute food deprivation-induced relapse to heroin seeking after punishment-imposed abstinence is described. A punishment-imposed abstinence model was successfully implemented using the seek and take chain schedule for heroin self-administration. Heroin-seeking tests are then performed following 24 h of food-deprivation stress.

Introduction to the Sign Test

2025

The sign test is an important tool in nonparametric statistics, offering a straightforward yet effective method for analyzing matched pairs, nominal data, or hypotheses concerning the median of a population. It transforms data points into positive or negative signs, avoiding the need for assumptions about data distribution and instead focusing on the direction of change. It is particularly valuable when data does not conform to the normal distribution requirements of many parametric tests. For...

Sign Convention

When analyzing a beam subjected to various loads, it is crucial to understand the internal forces and moments generated within the structure. These internal forces can be broadly classified into normal forces, shear forces, and bending moments. To determine these forces and moments, we use the method of sections and apply a specific sign convention based on their direction and the side of the section being analyzed. The normal force acts perpendicular to the beam's cross-section and can cause...

Signs of Puberty

2024

Puberty is a critical phase, typically beginning between the ages of 8 and 13 in girls and 9 and 14 in boys, though timing can vary based on genetics, environmental factors, and overall health. This period is characterized by the development of secondary sexual characteristics and the attainment of reproductive potential. Endocrine changes underpin puberty, with hormonal surges of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) instigated by Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH)...
