Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia is a common, progressive form of hair loss caused by genetically influenced sensitivity of hair follicles to androgens, making it an important model for studying follicle biology and tissue regeneration. In susceptible follicles, dihydrotestosterone binds androgen receptors and shortens the growth phase, causing progressive miniaturization and the production of finer, shorter hairs. Bioengineering approaches use three-dimensional follicle models, biomaterials, cultured cells, and controlled delivery systems to investigate these mechanisms and evaluate potential therapies. This research supports improved drug screening, hair-follicle regeneration, and personalized strategies for restoring hair growth.

The hair follicle is a highly complex appendage of the skin containing a multiplicity of cell types. The follicle undergoes constant cycling through the life of the organism including growth and resorption with growth dependent on specific stem cells. The targeting of the follicle by genes and stem cells to change its properties, in particular, the nature of the hair shaft is, discussed. Hair follicle delivery systems are described, such as liposomes and viral vectors for gene therapy. The...

Electrochemotherapy is the local treatment of solid tumors. The main mechanism is electroporation-mediated permeabilization of the tumor cells' membrane which enables increased internalization of cytostatics like bleomycin and cisplatin. Thus, antitumor effectiveness is potentiated at the site of the application of electric pulses to the tumors.
