Automated Deposition

Automated deposition is a computer-controlled method for placing materials in precise patterns, enabling reproducible fabrication beyond manual handling. In bioengineering, programmed motion systems dispense bioinks, cells, polymers, or other biomaterials through a nozzle or deposition head, often building structures layer by layer according to a digital design. Control of material flow, deposition speed, and spatial positioning helps shape features while preserving the properties needed for biological function. This approach supports tissue engineering, scaffold fabrication, organoid assembly, and the development of engineered biological models, improving consistency, scalability, and experimental control in regenerative medicine and biomedical research.

Phase Transitions: Sublimation and Deposition

2020

Some solids can transition directly into the gaseous state, bypassing the liquid state, via a process known as sublimation. At room temperature and standard pressure, a piece of dry ice (solid CO2) sublimes, appearing to gradually disappear without ever forming any liquid. Snow and ice sublimate at temperatures below the melting point of water, a slow process that may be accelerated by winds and the reduced atmospheric pressures at high altitudes. When solid iodine is warmed, the solid sublimes...

Peptide adsorption to plasticware during traditional tip-based serial dilutions can significantly impact potency determination and confound the understanding of structure-activity relationships used for lead identification and lead optimization phases of drug discovery. Here methods for automated acoustic non-contact serial dilution of peptide samples are described.

Digital Microfluidics is a technique characterized by the manipulation of discrete droplets (~nL - mL) on an array of electrodes by the application of electrical fields. It is well-suited for carrying out rapid, sequential, miniaturized automated biochemical assays. Here, we report a platform capable of automating several proteomic processing steps.
