Cyclic Fatigue Loading

Cyclic fatigue loading is the repeated application and removal of mechanical force used to evaluate how materials, devices, or biological structures withstand long-term use. Each loading cycle produces stress and strain, and accumulated microscopic damage can initiate and propagate cracks, cause deformation, or eventually lead to failure, depending on load magnitude, frequency, and environmental conditions. In bioengineering, this method assesses the durability of implants, prostheses, tissue-engineered scaffolds, and other biomedical materials under conditions that simulate physiological motion. Fatigue-life measurements help researchers compare designs, identify failure mechanisms, and improve the safety and reliability of devices intended for repeated loading.

Fatigue of Metals

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA The importance of studying metal fatigue in civil infrastructure projects was brought into the spotlight by the collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia in 1967. The eyebar-chain suspension bridge over the Ohio River collapsed during evening rush hour, killing 46 people as a result of the failure of a single eyebar with a small 0.1-inch defect. The defect reached a...

The Treadmill Fatigue Test: A Simple, High-throughput Assay of Fatigue-like Behavior for the Mouse

2016

Fatigue is a common, undertreated and frequently poorly-understood symptom in many diseases and disorders. New preclinical assays of fatigue may help to improve current understanding and future treatment of fatigue. To that end, the current protocol provides a novel means of measuring fatigue-like behavior in the mouse.

Cyclic Voltammetry (CV)

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Kayla Green — Texas Christian University A Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) experiment involves the scan of a range of potential voltages while measuring current. In the CV experiment, the potential of an immersed, stationary electrode is scanned from a predetermined starting potential to a final value (called the switching potential) and then the reverse scan is obtained. This gives a 'cyclic' sweep of potentials and the current vs. potential curve derived from the data is...

A Mouse Model of Fatigue Induced by Peripheral Irradiation

We describe a method using targeted peripheral irradiation to induce fatigue-like behavior in mice. The selected non-lethal irradiation dose leads to a week-long reduction in voluntary wheel-running activity.
