Droplet Size Analysis

Droplet size analysis is the measurement of droplet diameter and size distribution in a dispersed liquid system, providing essential information about uniformity, stability, and performance. In bioengineering, researchers quantify droplets using microscopy and image analysis or light-scattering methods, then calculate parameters such as mean size, polydispersity, and distribution width. These measurements help evaluate droplet generators, emulsions, microfluidic devices, and encapsulation systems by revealing how flow conditions, fluid properties, and device geometry affect droplet formation. Reliable size analysis supports the design of reproducible platforms for cell encapsulation, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and other applications that depend on controlled microscale environments.

2017

Lipid droplets are important organelles for the replication of several pathogens, including the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). We describe a method to isolate lipid droplets for quantitative mass spectrometry of associated proteins; it can be used under a variety of conditions, such as virus infection, environmental stress, or drug treatment.

Phase-shift nanoemulsions (PSNE) can be vaporized using high intensity focused ultrasound to enhance localized heating and improve thermal ablation in tumors. In this report, the preparation of stable PSNE with a narrow size distribution is described. Furthermore, the impact of vaporized PSNE on ultrasound-mediated ablation is demonstrated in tissue-mimicking phantoms.
