Wing Beat Sound

Wing beat sound is the acoustic signal produced when an animal’s wings move through air, making it a useful indicator of flight dynamics and behavior. Each stroke generates pressure fluctuations through unsteady aerodynamic forces, including air displacement, vortex formation, and interactions between the wings and surrounding flow; wing size, shape, beat frequency, and speed influence the resulting sound spectrum. In bioengineering, analyzing wing beat sound supports noninvasive identification and monitoring of flying organisms, while also informing the design of bio-inspired sensors, microphones, and flapping-wing robots. Linking acoustic patterns to wing motion can improve models of aerodynamic performance and autonomous flight control.

The study of music provides many examples of the superposition of waves and the constructive and destructive interference that occurs. Very few examples of music being performed consist of a single source playing a single frequency for an extended period of time. A single frequency of sound for an extended period might be monotonous to the point of irritation, similar to the unwanted drone of an aircraft engine or a loud fan. Music is pleasant and exciting due to mixing the changing frequencies...

In situ Protocol for Butterfly Pupal Wings Using Riboprobes

In order to examine gene expression in the pupal wing tissue of Bicyclus anynana, we present an optimized protocol for in situ hybridizations using riboprobes. We also provide guidelines for the further optimization of this protocol for use in pupal wings of other Lepidopteran species.

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Waves are disturbances that propagate through a material medium or empty space. Light waves can travel through a vacuum and some forms of matter, and are transverse in nature, which means that the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, sound waves are pressure waves that travel through an elastic medium like air,...

Cardiac Exam III: Abnormal Heart Sounds

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Having a fundamental understanding of normal heart sounds is the first step toward distinguishing the normal from the abnormal. Murmurs are sounds that represent turbulent and abnormal blood flow across a heart valve. They are caused either by stenosis (valve area too narrow) or regurgitation (backflow of blood across the valve) and are commonly heard as a "swishing" sound during auscultation.
