Selective Growth Medium

Selective growth medium is a laboratory culture medium formulated to favor the growth of a particular microorganism or cell type while suppressing others, making it an important tool in biological techniques. Its selectivity depends on specific nutrients, inhibitory substances, salt concentrations, pH conditions, antibiotics, or other environmental factors that create a growth advantage for the target organism. Researchers use these media to isolate organisms from mixed samples, enrich low-abundance populations, and support identification in clinical, environmental, and industrial microbiology. By reducing background growth, selective culture improves experimental control and enables more reliable downstream analyses, including microscopy, biochemical testing, and genetic characterization.

Dictyostelium discoideum is a popular model organism to study complex cellular processes such as cell migration, endocytosis, and development. The utility of the organism is dependent on the feasibility of genetic manipulation. Here, we present methods to transfect Dictyostelium discoideum cells that overcome existing limitations of culturing cells in liquid media.

A Method for Generating Oligodendrocyte-Conditioned Medium

2025

This video demonstrates the production of oligodendrocyte-conditioned medium (OCM) from oligodendrocyte lineage cells by stressing them to enhance their molecular release into the medium. This medium, which is rich in growth factors, cytokines, and other bioactive molecules, can be added to neuron cultures to gain insight into the impact of oligodendrocytes-secreted factors on neuronal physiology and connectivity.
