Bone Cartilage

Bone cartilage refers to the specialized cartilage associated with skeletal development, growth, and the bone-cartilage interface. During endochondral ossification, chondrocytes produce an extracellular matrix, enlarge, and become organized into zones that guide mineralization and replacement by bone; in growth plates, this process enables bones to lengthen. Cartilage also provides flexible, load-bearing surfaces at joints, where its matrix helps distribute forces and reduce friction. Studying bone cartilage supports research on skeletal development, growth disorders, osteoarthritis, fracture repair, and tissue-engineering strategies designed to restore or regenerate damaged musculoskeletal structures.

Growth of Cartilage and Bone Tissue

Chondrocytes form a temporary cartilaginous model by dividing and secreting a thick gel-like extracellular matrix. Once the chondrocytes undergo programmed cell death, osteoblasts enter the site of the cartilaginous model. The process of replacing the temporary cartilaginous model with bone in an ordered manner is called endochondral ossification. In endochondral ossification, not all of the cartilage is replaced by bone tissue. Some cartilage that performs a protective and supportive function...
