Closed System Harvesting

Closed system harvesting is the collection of biological materials from a culture vessel or bioprocess without exposing the product or environment to open handling. In a typical setup, sterile tubing, connectors, pumps, and collection containers transfer cells, tissues, or other culture products through a sealed pathway while maintaining controlled conditions and limiting contamination risk. This approach supports reproducible recovery in cell culture, microbial bioprocessing, and other biological production workflows. By reducing manual manipulation and environmental exposure, closed system harvesting can improve process consistency, protect product quality, and facilitate scalable, standardized operations in research and biotechnology.

Burch in their book The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. The 3 R's are replacement, reduction, and refinement of the use of animals in research. The use of cell lines and tissue cultures that originated from research animals is a replacement technique, as it allows for many experiments to be conducted in vitro. Harvesting...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Many animal experiments rely on final data collection time points that are gathered from the harvesting and testing of organs and tissues. The use of appropriate methods for the collection of organs and tissues can impact the quality of the samples and the analysis of the data that is gleaned for the testing of the tissues. The method of euthanasia of the animal can also impact the quality of...

Selective Harvesting of Marginating-hepatic Leukocytes

Marginating-hepatic leukocytes exhibit unique characteristics and distinct immunological functions compared to other leukocyte populations. Here we describe a method for selective harvesting of this specific hepatic cell population, through forced perfusion of the liver of rats or mice. Marginating-hepatic leukocytes seem critical in determining susceptibility to hepatic-related diseases and metastases.

Close Relationships and Culture

Culture shapes how people approach attraction, choose partners, and build long-term relationships. While some preferences in mate selection appear consistent across cultures, such as men valuing physical attractiveness and women emphasizing financial resources, cultural contexts influence how these preferences are expressed and prioritized. Marriage extends beyond romantic ideals in many societies and is deeply embedded in social, economic, and religious frameworks. The Role of Culture in Mate...
