Deoxygenated Blood

Deoxygenated blood is blood with reduced oxygen content after delivering oxygen to body tissues, a normal stage of circulation essential for cellular metabolism. As cells use oxygen to generate energy, hemoglobin releases oxygen and binds some carbon dioxide, while blood becomes darker and returns through veins to the heart. The right side of the heart pumps it to the lungs, where gas exchange replaces carbon dioxide with oxygen in the pulmonary capillaries. Studying deoxygenated blood helps explain circulation, respiration, tissue oxygenation, and conditions that impair cardiovascular or respiratory function.

Here, we present oxygen gradient ektacytometry, a rapid and reproducible method to measure red blood cell deformability in samples from patients with sickle cell disease under controlled deoxygenation and reoxygenation. This technique provides a way to study red blood cell sickling and to monitor sickle cell disease treatment efficacy.

Blood Oxygen Level-Dependent Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Visual Cortex

Source: Galenchik-Chan, A., et al. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) of the Visual Cortex with Wide-View Retinotopic Stimulation. J. Vis. Exp. (2023). The video demonstrates functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the visual cortex to map activity based on blood oxygenation levels. Structural MRI images are acquired as anatomical references, followed by fMRI scans. Visual stimuli are displayed to activate retinotopic neurons in the visual cortex. The increased energy demand...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The collection of blood from mice and rats for analysis can be done through a variety of methods. Each method of collection has variations in the type of restraint required, the invasiveness of the procedure, and the necessity of a general anesthetic.1Historically, the use of the retro-orbital sinus cavity has been used, but not without debate. The controversy related to the potential tissue...
