Ethanol Rehydration

Ethanol rehydration is the controlled replacement of ethanol in a biological specimen with water or an aqueous solution, restoring hydration after dehydration or alcohol fixation. The process typically uses a graded series of decreasing ethanol concentrations, allowing solvent exchange by diffusion and reducing abrupt changes that can distort cells or tissue structure. In biology, ethanol rehydration prepares tissue sections, cell samples, and other specimens for aqueous staining, microscopy, immunolabeling, or downstream analysis. Careful control of concentration, timing, and sample handling helps preserve morphology and improves the consistency and interpretability of experimental results.

Microdialysis of Ethanol During Operant Ethanol Self-administration and Ethanol Determination by Gas Chromatography

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

We present a protocol to rapidly form giant polymer vesicles (pGVs). Briefly, polymer solutions are dehydrated on dried agarose films adhered to coverslips. Rehydration of the polymer films results in rapid formation of pGVs. This method greatly advances the preparation of synthetic giant vesicles for direct applications in biomimetic studies.

Biofuels: Producing Ethanol from Cellulosic Material

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, cellulosic material (such as corn stalks, leaves, grasses, etc.) will be used as a feedstock for the production of ethanol. The cellulosic material is first pretreated (ground and heated), digested with enzymes, and then fermented with yeast. Ethanol production is monitored using an ethanol probe. The experiment can be extended to optimize ethanol production by varying the feedstock used,...
