Functional Polymer Synthesis

Functional polymer synthesis is the design and preparation of polymers containing chemical groups that provide specific physical, chemical, or biological functions. It typically involves polymerizing selected monomers while controlling molecular architecture, chain length, and the placement or reactivity of functional groups, which can enable binding, degradation, cross-linking, or environmental responsiveness. In biology, these materials support biomaterials development, drug and gene delivery, tissue engineering, biosensing, and model systems for studying cell interactions. By linking polymer structure to biological performance, functional polymer synthesis helps researchers create materials with tailored compatibility, stability, and activity for research and therapeutic applications.
