Karyotype Analysis

Karyotype analysis is a cytogenetic method used to examine the number, size, shape, and structure of an organism’s chromosomes, helping identify genetic abnormalities. In a typical analysis, cells are arrested during metaphase when chromosomes are highly condensed, stained to produce characteristic banding patterns, and photographed or digitally arranged into homologous pairs. This process can reveal changes such as extra or missing chromosomes, large deletions, duplications, and translocations. In biology and medicine, karyotype analysis supports the diagnosis of chromosomal disorders, evaluation of infertility and developmental conditions, prenatal screening, and investigation of chromosome changes in cancer, while also providing a foundation for studying genome organization and inheritance.

Spectral Karyotyping (SKY) is an advanced cytogenetics technique to identify genomic and chromosomal aberrations. This technique takes advantage of chromosome painting probes, which allow classification of all chromosomes. SKY can also identify complex chromosome aberrations and segregation defects in mice and humans with various diseases, including polycystic kidney disease.
