Mg53-mediated Membrane Repair

Mg53-mediated membrane repair is a cellular mechanism in which the protein MG53, also known as TRIM72, helps restore damaged plasma membranes and preserve cell integrity after injury. When membrane disruption exposes oxidized lipids, MG53 undergoes redox-dependent oligomerization, associates with repair vesicles, and directs them to the lesion, where they form a temporary patch that supports membrane resealing. This process is especially important in muscle cells, which experience repeated mechanical stress, and its study informs research on muscular injury, tissue protection, and regenerative medicine. Understanding MG53 also provides a framework for investigating how cells detect membrane damage and coordinate targeted repair.
