Photolithography Process

Photolithography is a patterning technique that transfers a designed image onto a surface, enabling precise fabrication of micro- and nanoscale structures. In a typical process, a substrate is coated with a light-sensitive photoresist, exposed through a photomask, and developed so illuminated or unilluminated regions are selectively removed; subsequent etching or deposition converts the resist pattern into a durable structure. In biology, this process creates microfluidic channels, cell-culture substrates, biosensors, and patterned surfaces that control cell positioning and interactions. Its high spatial resolution supports tissue engineering, lab-on-a-chip devices, and studies of how physical environments influence cellular behavior.

Simple techniques are described for the rapid production of microfabricated neural culture systems using a digital micromirror device for dynamic mask projection lithography on regular cell culture substrates. These culture systems may be more representative of natural biological architecture, and the techniques described could be adapted for numerous applications.

Processes at Electrodes

The electrode interacts with ions in the electrolyte solution at its interface. The rate of oxidation and reduction depends on the speed at which electrons can transfer through this interface. As ions attach to or leave the electrode surface, the electrode acquires a charge, and an electrical potential forms across the interface, making the process more difficult to reach equilibrium. The charge on the electrode affects the local ion concentrations in the solution, though thermal motion...
