Radiolabeled 2-deoxy-d-glucose

Radiolabeled 2-deoxy-D-glucose is a glucose analog used to measure cellular glucose uptake and metabolism in biological systems. Cells transport it through glucose transporters, and hexokinase phosphorylates it to radiolabeled 2-deoxy-D-glucose-6-phosphate; because the molecule cannot proceed efficiently through glycolysis, the labeled product accumulates and provides a measurable signal. Researchers use this approach to quantify glucose utilization in cultured cells, tissues, and experimental models, helping investigate energy metabolism, insulin responses, neuronal activity, cancer biology, and metabolic disease. Depending on the isotope and detection method, measurements can support biochemical assays, tissue analysis, or functional imaging.

2025

The acquisition of dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) data and reconstruction into time frames allows for metabolic brain connectivity analysis at the single-subject level. We describe a method to acquire [18F]FDG dynamic PET data of the rat brain and obtain a connectivity matrix through the extraction of time-activity curves of volumes of interest.
