Relapsing Remitting Course

Relapsing-remitting course is a pattern of disease progression in which periods of acute or increased symptoms, called relapses, alternate with intervals of partial or complete recovery, called remission. During a relapse, underlying biological activity temporarily intensifies, producing new symptoms or worsening existing ones; as that activity decreases, function may stabilize or improve, although recovery can be incomplete. This course is important in biology and medicine because tracking the timing, severity, and duration of relapses and remissions helps characterize disease behavior, distinguish it from steadily progressive courses, assess treatment response, and guide long-term monitoring and research into the processes that trigger recurrence.

The protocol aims to describe a mouse model for generating relapses of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, based on the dynamics of the response to induction chemotherapy.

A Method of Trigonometric Modelling of Seasonal Variation Demonstrated with Multiple Sclerosis Relapse Data

Combining plot analysis with trigonometric regression is a robust method for exploring complex, cyclical phenomena such as relapse onset timing in multiple sclerosis (MS). This method enabled unbiased characterisation of seasonal trends in relapse onset permitting novel inferences around the influence of seasonal variation, ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and latitude.

This video demonstrates the induction and clinical scoring of an animal model of multiple sclerosis: chronic-relapsing experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in DA rats. The disease, induced by immunizing rats with an emulsion containing whole rat spinal cord and complete Freund's adjuvant, presents clinical signs resembling the human disease.

A Procedure to Study Stress-Induced Relapse of Heroin Seeking after Punishment-Imposed Abstinence

A procedure that demonstrates a robust acute food deprivation-induced relapse to heroin seeking after punishment-imposed abstinence is described. A punishment-imposed abstinence model was successfully implemented using the seek and take chain schedule for heroin self-administration. Heroin-seeking tests are then performed following 24 h of food-deprivation stress.
