Speed Measurement

Speed measurement is the quantification of how quickly an object, organism, or biological process changes position over time, typically expressed as distance divided by elapsed time. In biological studies, researchers record movement across a known distance or use imaging and tracking systems to determine position at successive time points, then calculate speed from the resulting measurements; repeated observations can reveal changes in velocity and behavior. This approach helps assess animal locomotion, cell migration, cilia or flagella activity, and transport within cells. Reliable speed measurements support comparisons among species, experimental conditions, and disease states.

Pitot-static Tube: A Device to Measure Air Flow Speed

2023

Source: David Guo, College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA), Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Manchester, New Hampshire A Pitot-static tube is widely used for measuring unknown speeds in air flow, for example, it is used to measure airplane airspeed. By Bernoulli's principle, airspeed is directly related to variations in pressure. Therefore, the Pitot-static tube senses the stagnation pressure and static pressure. It is connected to a manometer or pressure transducer...

C. elegans is a useful model for studying the effects of ethanol on behavior. We present a behavioral assay that quantifies the effects of ethanol on the locomotion speed of crawling worms; both initial sensitivity and the development of acute functional tolerance to ethanol can be measured with this assay.

High-Speed Magnetic Tweezers for Nanomechanical Measurements on Force-Sensitive Elements

Here, we describe a high-speed magnetic tweezer setup that performs nanomechanical measurements on force-sensitive biomolecules at the maximum rate of 1.2 kHz. We introduce its application to DNA hairpins and SNARE complexes as model systems, but it will be also applicable to other molecules involved in mechanobiological events.

Distribution of Molecular Speeds

2023

The motion of molecules in a gas is random in magnitude and direction for individual molecules, but a gas of many molecules has a predictable distribution of molecular speeds. This predictable distribution of molecular speeds is known as the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The distribution of molecular speeds in liquids is comparable to that of gases but not identical and can help to understand the phenomenon of the boiling and vapor pressure of a liquid. Consider that a molecule requires a...

Measuring Attention and Visual Processing Speed by Model-based Analysis of Temporal-order Judgments

Temporal-order judgments can be used to estimate processing speed parameters and attentional weights and thereby to infer the mechanisms of attentional processing. This methodology can be applied to a wide range of visual stimuli and works with many attention manipulations.
