Synthetic Quartz Cell

Synthetic quartz cells are optical sample holders made from high-purity fused silica, a material selected for its strong ultraviolet and visible-light transmission and chemical stability. In spectrophotometry, the cell contains a liquid or biological sample while a defined path length allows incident light to pass through; the instrument compares transmitted and reference intensities to calculate absorbance according to the Beer-Lambert relationship. These cells support measurements of nucleic acids, proteins, enzyme reactions, and other biomolecular samples, particularly at ultraviolet wavelengths where ordinary glass or plastic cells can absorb light. Their durability and low optical background improve quantitative biological analysis.

This video presents synthetic biology and its role in bioengineering. Synthetic biology refers to the methods used to genetically modify organisms in order to make them capable of producing large quantities of a product. This product could be a protein that the cell already makes or a new protein that has been encoded in a newly-inserted DNA sequence. Here, we discuss how an organism's genetic material is modified using transformation or transfection. Then, the process is shown in the...

Rodent Brain Microinjection Using a Quartz Microneedle

Source: Paolone, G., et al. Personalized Needles for Microinjections in the Rodent Brain. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates a rodent brain microneedle injection using a quartz microneedle with holes. The microneedle is attached to a syringe and micropump to control the delivery rate. The needle with the injection solution is inserted into the brain with the delivery speed set at low. Once positioned, the delivery speed is increased. The needle is withdrawn after a brief pause.
