Transcriptional Synergy

Transcriptional synergy is a gene regulation phenomenon in which two or more regulatory factors produce a greater increase in transcription together than the sum of their individual effects. This cooperation occurs when transcription factors bind regulatory DNA elements and jointly recruit coactivators, chromatin-remodeling complexes, or the basal transcription machinery, thereby promoting efficient assembly of the transcriptional apparatus. Transcriptional synergy helps cells integrate multiple signaling pathways and environmental cues into precise patterns of gene expression. In biology, studying this mechanism clarifies how enhancers control development, differentiation, and cellular responses, while also improving interpretation of gene regulatory networks and disease-associated mutations.

Gains from Acquisition: Synergy

2025

Synergies in corporate acquisitions represent the additional value generated when two companies combine, exceeding the sum of their independent contributions. These synergies typically arise from cost efficiencies, revenue growth, and strategic advantages. Financially, synergy is measured as the Net Present Value (NPV) of future benefits minus integration costs, reflecting the post-acquisition increase in value. Cost synergies are achieved by streamlining operations, eliminating redundancies,...

Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing: Epsilometer Tests to Determine MIC Values of Two Antibiotics and Evaluate Antibiotic Synergy

In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, an antibiotic that exerts its antibacterial function by interfering with cell wall regeneration (1). Other antibiotics with diverse mechanisms of...

Master Transcription Regulators

2020

Master transcription regulators are regulatory proteins that are predominantly responsible for regulating the expression of multiple genes. Often these genes work in concert to drive a complex process. Activation of a master transcription regulator can lead to a cascade of transcriptional activation necessary for that outcome. These regulators can directly bind to the regulatory sequences of the various genes involved, or they can indirectly regulate transcription by binding to regulatory...

Transcription Elongation Factors

2020

Transcription elongation is a dynamic process that alters depending upon the sequence heterogeneity of the DNA being transcribed. Hence, it is not surprising that the elongation complex's composition also varies along the way while transcribing a gene. The transcription elongation is regulated via pausing of RNA polymerase on several occasions during transcription. In bacteria, these halts are necessary because the transcription of DNA into mRNA is coupled to the translation of that mRNA into a...
