Transmission Rate Analysis

Transmission rate analysis is the quantitative study of how quickly an infectious agent, genetic trait, or other biological factor spreads through a population. In infectious disease research, it uses measures such as contact frequency, probability of transmission per exposure, infectious duration, and the effective reproduction number to estimate spread under specific conditions. Researchers apply these analyses to compare pathogens, identify factors that increase or reduce transmission, and evaluate interventions such as vaccination, isolation, treatment, or behavioral changes. By linking biological mechanisms with population-level patterns, transmission rate analysis supports outbreak forecasting, public health planning, and broader studies of disease ecology and evolution.

This protocol describes a rapid and low material consuming procedure for the integration of transgenic extrachromosomal arrays into the Caenorhabditis elegans genome using ultra violet (UV) irradiation. Furthermore, this protocol is particularly well suited for transgenic lines that transmit extrachromosomal arrays at a high rate.

Ultrastructural Analysis of a Mouse Brain Section Using Transmission Electron Microscopy

Source: Lutz, D., et.al. Assessment of Ultrastructural Neuroplasticity Parameters After In Utero Transduction of the Developing Mouse Brain and Spinal Cord. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the preparation and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of a brain section from a mouse pup. The protocol starts with osmium tetroxide-fixed tissue embedded in resin, followed by precise trimming to isolate the region of interest and ultramicrotomy to produce semithin and ultrathin...

Design of Transmission Shafts - Stress Analysis

2024

Designing a transmission shaft requires a thorough understanding of the stresses induced by bending moments and torques, especially in systems where power is transferred through gears. These forces create force-couple systems at the centers of the shaft's cross-sections, leading to both transverse and torsional loading. Although shearing stresses from transverse loads are typically smaller than those from torques and are often overlooked, the significant normal stresses from these loads...

Measurement and Analysis of Extracellular Acid Production to Determine Glycolytic Rate

2015

Glycolysis is a defining metabolic marker in multiple biological systems. Monitoring glycolysis by measuring the extracellular flux of H+ is common, but requires correction to be quantitative and unambiguous. Here, we demonstrate how to gather and correct extracellular flux data to distinguish between respiratory and glycolytic sources of extracellular acidification.

Reaction Rate

2020

The rate of reaction is the change in the amount of a reactant or product per unit time. Reaction rates are therefore determined by measuring the time dependence of some property that can be related to reactant or product amounts. Rates of reactions that consume or produce gaseous substances, for example, are conveniently determined by measuring changes in volume or pressure. The mathematical representation of the change in the concentration of reactants and products, over time, is the rate...
