Carbon 13

Carbon-13 is a stable, naturally occurring isotope of carbon with six protons and seven neutrons, and it is important for identifying and tracing carbon-containing compounds. Its nuclear spin of one-half makes it detectable by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, while its low natural abundance produces relatively simple spectra that reveal molecular structure and chemical environments. Chemists use carbon-13 NMR to determine connectivity, functional groups, and reaction products, and employ carbon-13 labeling to follow metabolic pathways, reaction mechanisms, and material transformations. These applications make Carbon-13 a valuable tool in structural analysis, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and materials research.

Carbon-13 (¹³C) NMR: Overview

2024

Carbon-13 is a naturally occurring NMR-active isotope of carbon with a low natural abundance of 1.1%. In contrast, carbon-12 is the most abundant isotope of carbon with zero nuclear spin. Therefore, it is NMR inactive. The gyromagnetic ratio of carbon-13 is smaller than that of protons. As a result, carbon-13 resonance is about 6000 times weaker than proton resonance. For a given magnetic field strength, the resonance frequency of carbon-13 is about one-fourth of the resonance frequency for...

The fatty acid trophic marker approach, i.e., the assimilation of fatty acids as entire molecule and transfer into consumer tissue with no or minor modification, is hampered by knowledge gaps in fatty acid metabolism of small soil invertebrates. Isotopologue profiling is provided as a valuable tool to disentangle trophic interactions.

13C-isotope labeling is a useful technique for determining the cell central metabolism for various types of microorganisms. After cells have been cultured with a specific labeled substrate, GC-MS measurement can reveal functional metabolic pathways based on unique labeling patterns in proteinogenic amino acids.

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...
