Iso-pentane

Isopentane, also called 2-methylbutane, is a branched-chain alkane with the molecular formula C5H12 and an important model compound for relating molecular structure to physical properties. Its carbon skeleton contains a methyl branch, which reduces surface contact between molecules compared with straight-chain pentane, weakening dispersion interactions and lowering the boiling point; it remains highly volatile and flammable at room temperature. In chemistry, isopentane serves as a nonpolar solvent and reference compound in studies of alkane structure, phase behavior, and combustion, while its low boiling point supports specialized cooling and laboratory applications under controlled conditions.
