Mass Spectra Analysis

Mass spectra analysis is the interpretation of mass spectrometry data to determine the molecular mass, composition, and structural features of chemical substances. In a mass spectrometer, a sample is converted into gas-phase ions, separated according to their mass-to-charge ratios, and recorded as a spectrum of peaks; fragmentation patterns can provide additional structural information. Chemists use these spectra to identify unknown compounds, verify molecular formulas, characterize reaction products, and detect substances in complex mixtures. Combined with techniques such as chromatography, mass spectra analysis supports applications in organic chemistry, pharmaceuticals, environmental testing, metabolomics, and forensic science.

When solids, liquids, or condensed gases are heated sufficiently, they radiate some of the excess energy as light. Photons produced in this manner have a range of energies, and thereby produce a continuous spectrum in which an unbroken series of wavelengths is present. In contrast to continuous spectra, light can also occur as discrete or line spectra having very narrow linewidths interspersed throughout the spectral regions. Exciting a gas at low partial pressure using an electrical current,...

A specific and sensitive method to gain insight into the expression profile of glycosphingolipid antigens in immune organs and cells is described. The method takes advantage of the ion trap mass spectrometry allowing step-wise fragmentation of glycosphingolipid molecules for structural analysis in comparison to chemically synthesized standards.
