Microchannel Flow

Microchannel flow describes the movement of liquids or gases through channels with micrometer-scale dimensions, where confinement strongly influences transport and chemical behavior. Because these systems typically operate under laminar conditions, fluids flow in orderly layers, and mixing occurs mainly through molecular diffusion across short distances; pressure gradients or electroosmotic forces can drive movement. In chemistry, microchannel flow supports rapid mixing, precise residence-time control, and efficient heat and mass transfer in microreactors and analytical devices. These features enable better control of reaction conditions, improved safety for small-scale synthesis, and efficient screening of chemical processes.

A microchannels-on-a-chip platform was developed by the combination of photolithographic reflowable photoresist technique, soft lithography, and microfluidics. The endothelialized microchannels platform mimics the three-dimensional (3D) geometry of in vivo microvessels, runs under controlled continuous perfusion flow, allows for high-quality and real-time imaging and can be applied for microvascular research.

An efficient method to obtain highly purified viable meiotic fractions from mouse testis is described, which combines a refined cell dissociation protocol with fluorescent activated cell sorting (FACS). This method takes advantage of differences in the DNA content and nuclear density of discrete meiotic fractions.

Micro-particle image velocimetry (μPIV) is used to visualize paired images of micro particles seeded in blood flows which are cross-correlated to give an accurate velocity profile. Shear rate, maximum velocity, velocity profile shape, and flow rate, each of which has clinical applications, can be derived from these measurements.
