Probe Desorption

Probe desorption is the release of a probe molecule, ion, or particle from a surface or material after it has interacted with that environment. The process occurs when supplied energy, such as heat, light, an electric field, or solvent exposure, overcomes adsorption forces and binding energy, allowing the probe to leave the interface. In chemistry, controlling probe desorption helps characterize surface composition, adsorption strength, and reaction behavior. It supports analytical methods including mass spectrometry, chromatography, and surface spectroscopy, while also informing the design of chemical sensors, catalysts, and functional materials that depend on reversible molecular binding.

Desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) is an ambient method by which samples, including biological tissues, can be imaged with minimal sample preparation. By rastering the sample below the ionization probe, this spray-based technique provides sufficient spatial resolution to discern molecular features of interest within tissue sections.
