Chemical Dot Thermometer

A chemical dot thermometer is a compact temperature indicator that uses a chemical or thermochromic material to signal whether a defined temperature has been reached, making thermal conditions easy to assess without electronic sensors. When exposed to heat, the material undergoes a temperature-dependent color change, often through a reversible molecular transition or an irreversible chemical reaction, producing a visible dot response. In clinical settings, these indicators can support monitoring of temperature-sensitive materials, equipment, storage conditions, and treatment-related processes. Their simple, low-cost format provides rapid visual confirmation, although accuracy depends on calibration, exposure time, and the indicator’s specified temperature range.

Thermometers and Temperature Scales

2023

Any physical property that depends consistently and reproducibly on temperature can be used as the basis of a thermometer. For example, volume increases with temperature for most substances. This property is the basis for the common alcohol thermometer and the original mercury thermometers. Other properties used to measure temperature include electrical resistance, color, and the emission of infrared radiation. As many physical properties depend on temperature, the variety of thermometers is...

Gas Thermometers and the Kelvin Scale

2023

The definition of temperature in terms of molecular motion suggests that there should be a lowest possible temperature, where the average kinetic energy of molecules is zero (or the minimum allowed by quantum mechanics). Experiments confirm the existence of such a temperature, called absolute zero. An absolute temperature scale is one whose zero point is absolute zero. Such scales are convenient in science because several physical quantities, such as the volume of an ideal gas, are directly...

We describe the preparation of colloidal quantum dots with minimized hydrodynamic size for single-molecule fluorescence imaging. Compared to conventional quantum dots, these nanoparticles are similar in size to globular proteins and are optimized for single-molecule brightness, stability against photodegradation, and resistance to nonspecific binding to proteins and cells.

Dot Product

The dot product is an essential concept in mathematics and physics. In engineering, the dot product of any two vectors is the product of the magnitudes of the vectors and the cosine of the angle between them. It is denoted by a dot symbol between the two vectors. Consider a vehicle pulling an object along the ground using a rope. If the rope makes an angle with the horizontal axis, the work done can be calculated using the dot product of the force applied and the object's displacement. The dot...
