Ventricular Escape Rhythm

Ventricular escape rhythm is a protective cardiac rhythm that arises from the ventricles when impulses from the sinoatrial node or atrioventricular conduction system fail to activate the lower chambers. Ventricular pacemaker cells then generate spontaneous electrical activity, typically at a slow rate of about 20–40 beats per minute, producing wide QRS complexes and often atrioventricular dissociation on an electrocardiogram. Recognizing this rhythm is clinically important because it can indicate severe conduction disease, such as complete heart block, and may provide temporary cardiac output while the underlying problem is addressed. Assessment guides urgent management, including monitoring, treatment of reversible causes, and pacing when needed.

Optogenetic Stimulation of Escape Behavior in Drosophila melanogaster

Genetically encoded optogenetic tools enable noninvasive manipulation of specific neurons in the Drosophila brain. Such tools can identify neurons whose activation is sufficient to elicit or suppress particular behaviors. Here we present a method for activating Channelrhodopsin2 that is expressed in targeted neurons in freely walking flies.

Escape Velocity

2025

The escape velocity of an object is defined as the minimum initial velocity that it requires to escape the surface of another object to which it is gravitationally bound and never to return. For example, what would be the minimum velocity at which a satellite should be launched from the Earth's surface such that it just escapes the Earth's gravitational field? To calculate the escape velocity, it is assumed that no energy is lost to any frictional forces. In practice, a satellite launched from...

Generation of Influenza Virus Escape Variants against Neutralizing Antibodies

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for generating escape variants of neutralizing influenza virus monoclonal antibodies. Antibody-neutralized virus suspension is injected into embryonated chicken eggs to propagate escape variants selectively. This results in a virus population predominantly of escape variants, confirmed via a Hemagglutination assay.

Patient-specific Modeling of the Heart: Estimation of Ventricular Fiber Orientations

A methodology to estimate ventricular fiber orientations from in vivo images of patient heart geometries for personalized modeling is described. Validation of the methodology performed using normal and failing canine hearts demonstrate that that there are no significant differences between estimated and acquired fiber orientations at a clinically observable level.

A Treatment Package without Escape Extinction to Address Food Selectivity

Feeding difficulties are a common problem for children with developmental disorders, including autism, and behavioral interventions often include escape extinction. Recent research has begun to evaluate treatments that do not include escape extinction. This manuscript describes a multicomponent treatment package that does not use escape extinction to treat feeding difficulties.
