Ischemia Induced Infarction

Ischemia-induced infarction is localized tissue death caused by a prolonged reduction or interruption of blood flow, making it a key model for linking vascular failure to tissue injury. Without sufficient oxygen and nutrients, cells lose ATP, ion gradients collapse, and metabolic and inflammatory processes amplify membrane damage and necrosis; the resulting lesion depends on ischemia duration, tissue type, and developmental stage. In developmental biology, this process helps researchers examine how immature tissues respond to vascular disruption, how hypoxia alters cell survival and patterning, and how injury affects later growth. Such studies inform models of congenital vascular disorders, neonatal ischemic injury, and tissue repair.

Bilateral Common Carotid Artery Occlusion as an Adequate Preconditioning Stimulus to Induce Early Ischemic Tolerance to Focal Cerebral Ischemia

There is accumulating evidence, that ischemic preconditioning (PC) – a non-damaging ischemic challenge to the brain - confers a transient protection to a subsequent damaging ischemic insult. We established bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) as a preconditioning stimulus to induce early ischemic tolerance (IT) to transient focal cerebral ischemia (induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion, MCAO) in C57Bl6/J mice.

Inducing Thrombotic Stroke Through Hypoxia and Ischemia in a Mouse Model

This video demonstrates the procedure of replicating a thrombotic stroke in a mouse model by blocking the right common carotid artery and exposing the mouse to a low-oxygen environment. This process reduces blood and oxygen flow to the brain, causing blood clot formation and brain damage.
