Measurement Devices

Measurement devices are instruments that quantify physical properties such as temperature, pressure, force, length, flow, or electrical potential, making otherwise unseen conditions available for analysis and control. They operate by sensing a measurand and converting it into a readable signal, often through a transducer, signal-conditioning circuit, display, or data-acquisition system; calibration establishes the relationship between the output and a known reference. In engineering, these devices support design verification, process monitoring, automated control, safety testing, and quality assurance. Their accuracy, sensitivity, resolution, response time, and uncertainty determine how reliably engineers can model systems, diagnose faults, and improve performance.

We present a user-friendly, high-throughput operant system for the evaluation of pain behaviors in awake, conscious rodents. The Orofacial Pain Assessment Device (OPAD) can assess pain through a reward/conflict paradigm thus providing a more humane way of testing. This protocol will yield more clinically relevant and translational data from rodents.

Pitot-static Tube: A Device to Measure Air Flow Speed

2023

Source: David Guo, College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA), Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Manchester, New Hampshire A Pitot-static tube is widely used for measuring unknown speeds in air flow, for example, it is used to measure airplane airspeed. By Bernoulli's principle, airspeed is directly related to variations in pressure. Therefore, the Pitot-static tube senses the stagnation pressure and static pressure. It is connected to a manometer or pressure transducer...
