Structural Annotation

Structural annotation is the systematic labeling and documentation of structural components, properties, and relationships so that an engineering design can be interpreted, evaluated, and maintained accurately. It links elements such as beams, columns, slabs, connections, materials, dimensions, and loads to drawings, computer-aided design files, or building information models, often using standardized symbols, identifiers, and metadata. Engineers use structural annotation to communicate design intent, support structural analysis and coordination, reduce interpretation errors, and improve construction documentation. Consistent annotations also facilitate design reviews, code compliance checks, fabrication, inspection, and lifecycle management of infrastructure.

Genome Annotation and Assembly

The genome refers to all of the genetic material in an organism. It can range from a few million base pairs in microbial cells to several billion base pairs in many eukaryotic organisms. Genome assembly refers to the process of taking the DNA sequencing data and putting it all back together in a correct order to create a close representation of the original genome. This is followed by the identification of functional elements on the newly assembled genome, a process called genome annotation.

Guidelines for computer based structural and functional characterization of protein using the I-TASSER pipeline is described. Starting from query protein sequence, 3D models are generated using multiple threading alignments and iterative structural assembly simulations. Functional inferences are thereafter drawn based on matches to proteins with known structure and functions.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...
