Chilean Aquaculture

Chilean aquaculture is the cultivation of fish, shellfish, algae, and other aquatic organisms in managed marine and freshwater environments, making it an important part of Chile’s food system and coastal economy. Production relies on hatchery or seed collection, controlled feeding, water-quality management, and biosecurity to support growth while limiting disease and mortality. Because farms interact with surrounding ecosystems, researchers assess nutrient release, chemical use, habitat effects, escapes, and interactions with wild species through environmental monitoring. These practices help guide sustainable farm design, regulatory decisions, and conservation strategies, while improving production efficiency and understanding how aquaculture can contribute to food security under changing environmental conditions.
