Matrix Deposition

Matrix deposition is the accumulation of particles, dissolved substances, or biological materials within or on a surrounding matrix, such as soil, sediment, water, or organic matter. It occurs through processes including settling, adsorption, precipitation, filtration, and biological production, with deposition rates influenced by particle size, surface chemistry, flow conditions, and matrix composition. In environmental research, studying matrix deposition helps explain how nutrients, contaminants, and other materials move through ecosystems and become retained or redistributed. These measurements support assessments of pollutant fate, sediment quality, ecosystem exposure, and the effectiveness of remediation strategies.

Phase Transitions: Sublimation and Deposition

2020

Some solids can transition directly into the gaseous state, bypassing the liquid state, via a process known as sublimation. At room temperature and standard pressure, a piece of dry ice (solid CO2) sublimes, appearing to gradually disappear without ever forming any liquid. Snow and ice sublimate at temperatures below the melting point of water, a slow process that may be accelerated by winds and the reduced atmospheric pressures at high altitudes. When solid iodine is warmed, the solid sublimes...

2015

The creation of functional microtissues within microfluidic devices requires the stabilization of cell phenotypes by adapting traditional cell culture techniques to the limited spatial dimensions in microdevices. Modification of collagen allows the layer-by-layer deposition of ultrathin collagen assemblies that can stabilize primary cells, such as hepatocytes, as microfluidic tissue models.

Molecular imaging with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-based imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS) allows the simultaneous mapping of multiple analytes in biological samples. Here, we present a protocol for the detection and visualization of amyloid β protein on brain tissues of Alzheimer's disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy samples using MALDI-IMS.

This report describes the use of a custom-built system to perform aerosol deposition of thick films of yttrium iron garnet onto sapphire substrates at RT. The deposited films are characterized using scanning electron microscopy, profilometry, and ferromagnetic resonance to give a representative overview of the capabilities of the technique.

We present the synthesis of the organic-based ferrimagnet vanadium tetracyanoethylene (V[TCNE]x, x~2) via low temperature chemical vapor deposition (CVD). This optimized recipe yields an increase in Curie temperature from 400 K to over 600 K and a dramatic improvement in magnetic resonance properties.
