Insect Culture Medium

Insect culture medium is a formulated nutrient solution used to maintain and multiply insect cells under controlled laboratory conditions, supporting studies of host responses and infectious agents. It supplies amino acids, vitamins, salts, energy sources, and buffering components that sustain cellular metabolism while maintaining suitable pH and osmotic conditions; supplements can further promote growth or adaptation to serum-free culture. In immunology and infection research, these media enable insect-cell propagation, recombinant protein production, baculovirus generation, and controlled infection assays. Consistent formulation improves cell viability, experimental reproducibility, and interpretation of immune or pathogen-related responses.

Nonlytic insect cell expression systems are underutilized for production, cellular trafficking/localization, and recombinant protein functional analysis. Here, we describe methods to generate expression vectors and subsequent transient protein expression in commercially available lepidopteran cell lines. The co-localization of Bemisia tabaci aquaporins with subcellular fluorescent marker proteins is also presented.

Osmoregulation in Insects

2019

Malpighian tubules are specialized structures found in the digestive systems of many arthropods, including most insects, that handle excretion and osmoregulation. The tubules are typically arranged in pairs and have a convoluted structure that increases their surface area. Malpighian tubules extend from the digestive tract, typically the area between the midgut and hindgut, into the hemolymph—a mixture of blood and interstitial fluid found in insects and other arthropods, as well as most...
