4d-ct Scan

A 4D-CT scan is an imaging technique that combines three-dimensional anatomical information with a fourth dimension, time, to show how structures move or change during a physiological cycle. The scanner acquires multiple CT images while tracking motion, commonly through respiratory or cardiac gating, then sorts and reconstructs them into time-resolved image sets. In medicine, 4D-CT supports radiation therapy planning by characterizing tumor and organ motion, particularly in the chest and abdomen, and can improve target definition and treatment accuracy. It also helps clinicians assess dynamic anatomy and select strategies that account for movement rather than relying on a static image.

Multi-modality imaging is a valuable approach for studying bacterial colonization in small animal models. This protocol outlines infection of mice with bioluminescent Citrobacter rodentium and the longitudinal monitoring of bacterial colonization using composite 3D diffuse light imaging tomography with μCT imaging to create a 4D movie of C. rodentium infection.

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut It's a little-known fact that the discovery and (inadvertent) use of X-rays garnered the first ever Nobel Prize in Physics. The famous X-ray image of Dr. Röntgen's wife's hand from 1895 that sent shock waves through the scientific community looks like most modern day 2D medical X-ray images. Though it is not the newest technology, X-ray absorption...
