Blood Perfusion Measurement

Blood perfusion measurement is the quantitative assessment of blood flow through tissue, providing an indicator of oxygen and nutrient delivery and vascular function. Depending on the method, it tracks moving red blood cells or the passage of an injected tracer using techniques such as Doppler ultrasound, laser speckle imaging, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging; measured signals are converted into tissue blood-flow or perfusion values. In medicine, these measurements help evaluate circulation in the brain, heart, and limbs, identify ischemia or impaired microvascular function, monitor treatment, and support research into disease progression and tissue viability.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

This video describes an antegrade perfusion technique of an isolated mouse heart during which a perfusate is injected through the left ventricle, and eventually, it perfuses the entire myocardium. This method can be used to isolate cardiomyocytes from murine models and generate decellularized hearts for further downstream applications.
