Cortical Activation Measurement

Cortical activation measurement is the assessment of changes in brain activity within the cerebral cortex, helping clinicians and researchers link neural function to sensation, movement, cognition, and disease. Depending on the method, it detects electrical signals produced by neuronal activity or associated changes in cerebral blood flow, oxygenation, or metabolism using tools such as electroencephalography and functional neuroimaging. In medicine, these measurements support evaluation of brain injury, epilepsy, stroke, and neurological disorders, while also mapping functional regions before surgery and assessing responses to treatment. Standardized activation measures can improve diagnosis, guide clinical decisions, and clarify how brain networks operate.

This report describes a method for measuring Drosophila larval activity using the TriKinetics Drosophila Activity Monitor. The device employs infrared beams to detect movements of up to 16 individual animals. Data can be analyzed to represent motion parameters including rates and the positions of the animals within the assay chambers.
