Debriefing Session

A debriefing session is a structured, facilitated conversation held after an event, simulation, clinical encounter, or procedure to review what occurred, clarify reasoning, and identify lessons for future practice. In medicine, participants reconstruct the situation, compare actions with intended plans, and use guided questions to examine decisions, communication, teamwork, and system factors without reducing the discussion to individual blame. Debriefing can consolidate learning after simulation, support reflective practice, reveal safety hazards, and inform changes to protocols or team behavior. When conducted in a psychologically safe environment, it connects clinical experience with evidence-based improvement and strengthens patient safety and professional development.
