Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the medical specialty focused on the digestive system, including the gastrointestinal tract, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, and it plays a central role in diagnosing and treating disorders that affect digestion, nutrient absorption, and metabolism. Gastroenterologists combine patient history and physical examination with laboratory tests, imaging, endoscopy, and tissue analysis to identify inflammation, infection, obstruction, bleeding, and abnormal organ function. The field addresses conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis, gastrointestinal cancers, and pancreatic disorders. Its clinical and research advances improve screening, minimally invasive treatment, disease prevention, and understanding of how digestive health influences overall human health.

Simulating Pancreatic Neuroplasticity: In Vitro Dual-neuron Plasticity Assay

Cited by 3 •

2014

Neuronal plasticity is an increasingly recognized, but insufficiently understood feature of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Here, in the example of human pancreatic disorders, we present an in vitro neuroplasticity assay for the study of neuronal plasticity in the GI tract at both morphological and functional level.

A Novel Method for the Culture and Polarized Stimulation of Human Intestinal Mucosa Explants

We introduce a novel method for the maintenance of human intestinal mucosa in culture and monitoring of the response to various types of stimuli over at least 24 hrs. With our method, the polarity of the tissue is maintained, allowing for a physiological stimulation via the apical route.

Murine Model of Intestinal Ischemia-reperfusion Injury

Here we describe the detailed procedure of intestinal ischemia-reperfusion in mice which results in reproducible injury without mortality to encourage the standardization of this technique across the field. This model of intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury can be utilized to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of injury and regeneration.

Here we outline and demonstrate a protocol for primary mouse liver sinusoidal endothelial cell (LSEC) isolation. The protocol is based on liver collagenase perfusion, nonparenchymal cell purification by low-speed centrifugation, and CD146 magnetic bead selection. We also phenotype and characterize these isolated LSECs using flow cytometry and scanning electron microscopy.

E-Patient Counseling Trial (E-PACO): Computer Based Education versus Nurse Counseling for Patients to Prepare for Colonoscopy

The aim of this trial is to establish the position of online computer-based education as a tool for patient preparation prior to a colonoscopy. Computer based education is compared with the standard of care, nurse counseling, evaluating endoscopic quality measures and patient related outcome measures.
